The German School Erbil was inaugurated on 16th of September 2010. In its first year of operation it offers classes in primary school year 1-5, as well as several kindergarten groups and a pre-school class. The school’s long term goal is to expand and introduce the German Abitur in the country of Iraq by 2017/18. In its second year of operation more than 170 children attend our school; 31 of whom go to kindergarten, 20 attend pre-school and over 120 attend Primary and Middle school in classes 5 and 6.

Numerous Kurdish emigrants who lived in Germany, Switzerland and Austria are now returning to their home Kurdistan to help in the development of the region. Many families share the desire that their children, who were born and raised in a German speaking environment, do not lose the cultural and bilingual advantages which they have gained. Those that have become acquainted with and value the German culture shall have the opportunity to transfer this bond to the next generation.

At the same time Kurdish children from Erbil and the surrounding areas who have never left the country have now got the possibility to get a broader school education than within the local school system. With their “Abitur” diploma the graduates of our school will have the opportunity to peruse their post-graduate education or a professional career; the first Abitur certificate is planned for 2018 and should open the doors for the graduates to all Iraqi, German and European universities.

We seek for excellent achievements in the academics, arts and sports through the use of state of the art teaching- and learning methods.

We facilitate encounters of different cultures and advocate intercultural learning.
