About Us

The German School Association (Schulverein) held its first meeting in August 2009 during which the school’s executive board and the committee were elected. The Association consists of 5 eligible members with right to vote and 2 assistants (see list under contact). It is supported by the German General Consulate in Erbil. The German School Association meets on a monthly basis.

In April 2010, the Kurdish Government and Ministry of Education offered the German School Association a large building in Gulan Street, Erbil for the development of the German school. With its 14 classrooms, 5 kindergarten rooms and a pre-school room, laboratory rooms, an assembly hall, administration area and large area for physical exercise, it offers sufficient space to start and further develop the school in the coming years.

Major renovation works took place over the months of July and August 2010 to restore the buildings to a state that would suit local climatic conditions and meet the high standards expected at a German School. All rooms were refitted with double glazed windows for noise reduction and energy saving measures, all rooms were equipped with air conditioning units that can be switched to heating in the winter months, all sanitary facilities were completely renovated, a school kitchen was built etc.

Work was completed in time to meet the inauguration of the German School Erbil beginning of September.

In the first year of teaching the school offered three kindergarten classes (one group years 3-4, two groups years 4-5), one pre-school class, primary school classes 1-4 and one class 5, the first year of secondary school.

The German School Erbil started with a record total number of 120 children in its first year of existence. The kindergarten already reached its full capacity and places in the primary classes are limited.

In the second year since its opening, 170 children attend our school. We have 4 colleagues working in the kindergarten, 2 in pre-school and 11 teachers working in the Primary and Middle School. The language of instruction is German except for the subjects prescribed by the Kurdish Ministry of Education (Kurdish, Arabic, Religion and Social Science). It is expected that the number of students will rise considerably. Therefore the school is planning to expand to be able to accept more applications. More classroom space should be available by the next school year to accommodate more students.

School fees in the second year are as follows: Kindergarten: US$ 175 per month, payable during 12 months (total of US$ 2.100 per year). All other classes US$ 200 per month, payable during 12 months (total of US$ 2400 per year). The first third is to be paid upon registration, the second third is due at the end of september and the last payment is due at the end of january (end of first semester).

Mr. Juergen Ender became Project Manager of the German School Erbil in May 2010 and is the Principal of the School since September 2010.

The development of the German School Erbil is made possible with the support of diverse Kurdish and German sources. The Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Germany (AA in Berlin , GK in Erbil) and the central institution for German Schools Abroad (ZfA in Cologne) as well as the Kurdish Ministry of Education in Erbil support the school with financial and organizational help. Kurdish and German companies aid by taking over several necessary construction and refurbishment works. Companies and individuals help the school through their generous sponsorship.
